Arkema Partners with One Foundation for the “Unite for Clean Water” Campaign on World Water Day
Taking the occasion of “World Water Day” and “China Water Week”, at Zhangjiagang Lvfeng School, Jiangsu Province, Hengshui Limin Road Primary School, Hebei Province, and Baishiyan Primary School, Zhicun Town, Mengzi City, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, where Arkema’s long-term CSR project “ChemArt Green Innovation Class” is located, Arkema organized children to carry out interesting poetry recitals under the theme of " Valuing Water "in order to help children to establish the concepts of water conservation and clean water, and cultivate correct and standardized awareness of water saving and using. Arkema also led creative sessions where children could express their understanding of water with a paint brush. The classrooms were animated by the imaginative and sincere paintings, showing that the children really valued the importance of water.
In November 2020, Arkema officially joined One Foundation's "Clean Water Project" and has since supported its gradual implementation of bringing students clean water in 10 rural schools in Yunnan Province, as a prerequisite to their healthy growth. Arkema and its subsidiary, the specialty surfactants leader, Arkema-ArrMaz, donated approximately RMB 400,000 (USD 58,000), to install a water purification device at each school and equip students with safety water bottles, and water and hygiene knowledge. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021, benefiting approximately 4000 students each year. Meanwhile, Arkema also visited each school to understand their supplementary educational needs. In order to broaden students’ horizons and enrich their knowledge, the “ChemArt Green Innovation Class”, Arkema’s CSR project in China, was established at Baishiyan Primary School, Zhicun Town, Mengzi City, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. This is a further interpretation of Arkema’s CSR “Better Life, Better Future” brand. Employee volunteers will regularly give safety and environmental protection courses and other related campus activities for children, so as to create a better future for them with "green" and "innovation".
Arkema is also actively involved in various “water” related CSR projects worldwide. Launched in 2016, the Optim’O program encompasses all water-management activities across the group, and in particular those geared towards consumption reduction, recycling, COD reduction and water-stress scenarios. Optim’O project covered 35 sites that account for most of the Group’s water use and/or generate the most wastewater, helping to achieve the goal of reducing the total cost of water use by 15% and the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of discharges by 60% in intensity compared to 2012. Both by 2030. In addition, as the main sponsor of the Sail for Water NGO, Arkema partnered with a water filtration membrane manufacturer, developed a more efficient and durable filter produced from a new Kynar® fluoropolymer grade with long-lasting hydrophilic properties, helping in the face of the global issue of water quality, and realizing the mission to "take action to support universal access to clean drinking water". Currently, the NGO has given 100,000 people in 22 countries access to drinking water by distributing water filters.
Water management has always been one of Arkema's core focuses, and is also an important part of Arkema's five innovation platforms. The Group is committed to developing and delivering cutting-edge technological solutions for water access, addressing current and future major social challenges and contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As a responsible specialty materials company, Arkema will continue to promote innovation and sustainable development while actively fulfilling its corporate social responsibility in the future.
